How to Request a Natural Stone Quote: An Overseas Buyer’s Checklist

Chinese G603 Granite — catalogue reference for identifying a material in an enquiry; current availability must be confirmed.

A useful natural stone quotation starts with a clear scope. Send the material reference, intended application, dimensions, thickness, finish, quantity and delivery destination together. If some decisions remain open, mark them as provisional so the supplier can explain assumptions instead of pricing a different product.

Chinese G603 Granite — catalogue reference for identifying a material in an enquiry; current availability must be confirmed.

1. Identify the stone and its intended use

Include a product link, commercial stone name or labelled reference image. Explain whether you need slabs, tiles, countertops, furniture or another finished piece. State whether the installation is indoors, outdoors or exposed to water. A photograph helps communicate colour and pattern but cannot confirm the stone’s identity, performance or available batch.

2. Supply a dimensioned cutting list

List each piece with its length, width, thickness, quantity and unit. For fabricated pieces, attach revision-controlled drawings showing visible faces, edge profiles, cut-outs, holes and joint locations. Label every dimension in millimetres or another agreed unit. Explain whether sizes are preliminary or based on final site measurements; do not ask a supplier to infer dimensions from an unscaled image.

3. Define the finish and visual approval

Specify the required surface treatment and edge appearance. Ask for batch photographs and a representative sample where needed. For strongly veined stone, discuss vein direction, layout approval and whether matching is required across adjacent pieces. Natural variation means that two materials with similar names may not deliver the same visual result.

Item Information to send Why it matters
Material Product link, stone name and application Avoids pricing a visually similar alternative
Fabrication Dimensions, thickness, drawings and quantities Defines the actual work and material requirement
Delivery Destination, named place and required date Clarifies packing, freight and exclusions

4. Make quality requirements explicit

State required dimensional tolerances, acceptable repairs, inspection records and any destination project testing needs before pricing. Ask who approves the samples and drawings and at which stage production can proceed. Inspection photographs can document appearance and dimensions, but they are not a substitute for a specified independent test.

5. Compare the same delivery scope

Give the destination country, port or delivery location and requested project date. Ask the quote to identify the agreed trade term and named place, packing scope, freight scope and excluded charges. Confirm who arranges unloading, import clearance and local delivery. A lower material price may exclude services included in another quotation.

6. Separate estimates from confirmed commitments

Ask the supplier to state quotation validity, availability assumptions, production timing after approvals and payment milestones. Do not treat a catalogue listing as proof of reserved stock. Confirm lead time, quantity and the final specification in writing before committing to an order.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ask for a quote without final drawings?

Yes. Label the request as a budget enquiry, identify missing decisions and request a list of pricing assumptions. Reconfirm the price after the final specification is approved.

Does a sample reserve the matching slabs?

Not by itself. Ask for the proposed batch, reservation conditions and written approval process; a sample is a visual reference, not a stock commitment.
